I did just that. At my visit to my doctor, I watched him taking my blood pressure and pulse readings. When he was done, I asked him to explain and show me how to monitor my blood pressure.
My doctor is excellent. He handed me a leaflet on foods to avoid to control my blood pressure. The young doctor took his time and in laymans terms described the basics of understanding systolic diastolic blood pressure. He then suggested for me to buy an Omron automatic blood pressure monitor because they were widely used by home monitoring. I now have an Omron M10 monitor. It is very easy to use and the user guide is excellent too.
